How to Find a Lost iPhone

08 Oct 2026

Find a Lost iPhone

Losing your iPhone can feel stressful, especially when it has your photos, messages, contacts, banking apps, emails, and personal information. The best thing to do is act quickly and use Apple’s official tools before trying anything else.

Quick answer: to find a lost iPhone, open the Find My app on another Apple device or go to iCloud.com/find, sign in with the Apple Account linked to the missing iPhone, select the device, and check its location on the map. If the iPhone is nearby, play a sound. If you cannot find it quickly, mark it as lost to help protect your information.

Apple’s Find My service is designed to help you locate a lost iPhone, mark it as lost, protect your personal information, or erase the device if you believe it is permanently lost or stolen. You can use the Find My app on another Apple device or go to iCloud.com/find on the web.

These steps apply whether your iPhone was bought new, used, or as part of a wider refurbished phones setup, including refurbished iPhones already linked to your Apple Account.

Start with Find My

Open the Find My app on another Apple device, such as an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch. You can also visit iCloud.com/find from a browser.

Sign in with the same Apple Account used on the missing iPhone, then choose the lost iPhone from your device list. If the iPhone is online, you may see its current location on the map. If it is offline, you may only see the last known location.

If you use Family Sharing, your device may also appear in Find My on a family member’s Apple device. Apple says you can use another trusted Apple device or a family member’s device to help locate a lost iPhone.

Use Sound When the iPhone Is Nearby

If the map shows your iPhone is nearby, use Play Sound.

This can help when the phone is:

  • under a couch
  • inside a bag
  • in the car
  • under bedding
  • in a jacket pocket
  • somewhere around the house or office

This is often better than calling the phone, especially if it is on silent or buried somewhere.

Check the Last Known Location

If the iPhone is not nearby, look at the location shown in Find My. It may point to somewhere you recently visited, such as work, school, a café, public transport, a shop, a friend’s house, or a rideshare trip.

Use the location as a guide, but be careful. If the iPhone appears to be in a public place, contact the business or transport provider first. If you think the device was stolen, do not try to confront anyone yourself.

Turn on Lost Mode

If you cannot find the iPhone quickly, mark it as lost.

Lost Mode can lock the iPhone with a passcode and show a custom message with your contact number on the lock screen. This gives someone a way to contact you if they find the device, while helping protect your information.

Keep the message short and safe, such as:

Lost iPhone. Please call this number if found.

Do not add passwords, addresses, banking details, or private information.

Avoid Phone-Number Tracking Sites

Many people search for phrases like find my iPhone by phone number, locate my iPhone using phone number, or find iPhone using number.

In most cases, you cannot safely track an iPhone’s live location just by entering a phone number into a website. The proper way to locate your own iPhone is through Find My or iCloud.com/find.

Be careful with websites claiming they can find an iPhone by phone number for free. These services may be unreliable, misleading, or unsafe. Use Apple’s official Find My tools first.

Handle an Offline or Switched-Off iPhone

If the iPhone is switched off, out of battery, or not connected to the internet, Find My may not show a live location. You may still be able to see the last known location or receive an update if the device comes online again.

Apple says Find My needs to be turned on before a device goes missing so you can locate it later. If Find My was not enabled before the iPhone was lost, Apple’s Find My tools may not be able to locate, mark, or erase the device remotely.

Protect Your Data if the iPhone Was Stolen

If you believe your iPhone was stolen, use Find My to mark it as lost, then contact local police and your mobile provider.

Your mobile provider may be able to help protect your SIM or mobile service. You should also review your Apple Account, email, banking apps, and important logins if you are worried someone may try to access your information.

Find My also includes Activation Lock, which is designed to stop someone else from using your iPhone if it is lost or stolen. Apple says your Apple Account password is required before someone can turn off Find My, erase the device, or reactivate it.

Erase the iPhone Only as a Last Step

Remote erase can help protect your personal data if you believe the iPhone is permanently lost or stolen. However, it should usually be a last step after you have tried to locate the device and mark it as lost.

Before erasing, check whether:

  • the location is familiar
  • someone may have handed it in
  • Lost Mode is active
  • your mobile provider has been contacted
  • you still have a chance of recovering it

Apple says Find My can erase a device if you believe it is permanently lost or stolen.

Set Up Protection for Next Time

If you find your iPhone, or when you set up a new one, check your Find My settings straight away.

Turn on:

  • Find My iPhone
  • Find My network
  • Send Last Location
  • a strong passcode
  • regular iCloud backup

Apple says Find My must be turned on so you can locate a lost Apple device later, and Send Last Location can help send the device location when the battery is low.

What to Do Next If Your iPhone Is Still Missing

The fastest way to find a lost iPhone is to use Find My or iCloud.com/find. Start by checking the map, play a sound if the iPhone is nearby, then mark it as lost if you cannot recover it quickly.

Avoid random phone-number tracking websites, protect your Apple Account, and contact police if you believe the iPhone was stolen. If recovery is unlikely, remote erase can help protect your personal information.

If your iPhone cannot be recovered and you need to replace it, compare available refurbished iPhones by model, storage, condition grade, and price before buying.
